This pair of side chairs dates from the period around 1700 to 1720, crafted in an English provincial style. The timber has a warm brown colour with a rich patina showing centuries of wear, complemented by block legs and vasiform splats on the high backs. Shaped crest rails surmount each back, and the front legs are joined by turned stretchers. The drop-in seats are newly reupholstered in a textile featuring an American flag pattern in red, white and blue. Each chair measures 93 cm high, 45 cm wide and 42 cm deep, with a seat height of 46 cm. Suitable for use as accent seating around a dining table or in a living space, these chairs bring character to a country house interior. The robust oak construction and functional design suit daily placement in a hallway, bedroom or study. They provide practical seating while serving as a distinct focal point in traditional rooms.

Country oak chairs from this period typically feature solid wood construction, shaped crest rails, vasiform or vase-shaped back splats, and sturdy turned stretchers connecting the legs.

Craftsmen utilised solid European oak, constructing the frames with traditional mortise and tenon joinery secured by wooden pegs, alongside turned front stretchers and drop-in or padded seats.

Authentic period examples demonstrate subtle hand-planing marks, uneven wear on the front footrests, historic pegged joints, and dark oxidisation within unpolished areas under the frame.

These classic wooden seats can be paired with contemporary dining tables or positioned individually as statement accent chairs in entryways and corridors to introduce natural timber texture.

Dust the timber frames regularly using a soft microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice per year, avoiding chemical cleaners and direct heat sources.
