This Hepplewhite open armchair dates from 1900 and is constructed in dark brown mahogany with a mustard-yellow upholstered seat. The piece stands on slender fluted front legs with turned feet, and incorporates scrolling arm terminals and brass studding around the seat rail. The oval backrest features an intricate wheat-sheaf splat framed by carved foliage, while the serpentine-fronted seat provides a comfortable resting place. Measuring 94 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, the armchair suits a traditional study, a formal living room, or a bedroom as a reading chair. It functions effectively as a decorative accent seating option within an English country house interior, bringing classic period style and functional utility to domestic spaces.

Hepplewhite style seating emerged in late 18th-century England, defined by light, curvilinear frames and shield or oval backrests. These designs often incorporate classical carved motifs such as wheat sheaves, prince of wales feathers, or urns.

Primary woods typically included dark mahogany or satinwood, paired with beech or pine for internal framing. Construction utilised mortise and tenon joints, traditional horsehair padding, and hand-driven brass upholstery tacks.

Authentic 18th-century examples display evidence of hand-tooling, asymmetrical timber shrinkage along round elements, and original hand-cut joinery. Later Victorian or 20th-century reproductions often feature machine-sawn components and modern uniform screws.

Position the armchair as an accent seat alongside a modern desk or within a neutral reading corner. Pairing dark timber tones with bold upholstery fabric creates contrast while grounding the surrounding decor.

Apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cotton cloth to protect the wood finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber splitting and fabric fading.
