This pair of antique armchairs dates from 1900 and follows a Hepplewhite style in dark brown mahogany with pale green patterned fabric upholstery. Each chair presents an oval carved back framing a Prince of Wales feather splat, shaped open arms with pale padded armrests, and a serpentine seat. The construction stands on turned tapering reeded front legs and outswept back legs, displaying carved details throughout the wooden frames. The dimensions measure 92 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, with a seat height of 45 cm. These armchairs function effectively as statement seating in a drawing room, formal study, or traditional hallway. The design complements period interiors while offering practical seating for guests around a desk, in a conversational grouping, or as decorative side chairs within a principal living space.

Hepplewhite style armchairs originated in late 18th-century England, named after cabinetmaker George Hepplewhite. The style is characterised by graceful Neoclassical lines, shield or oval backs, and carved centre splats featuring motifs such as wheatsheaves or Prince of Wales feathers.

Chairs of this period were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods like mahogany, chosen for its tight grain and durability. Construction relies on mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved decoration, and traditional upholstery techniques using webbing, horsehair padding, and woven fabrics.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-tooling, such as slight irregularities in carved elements, hand-cut dovetails or mortises, and natural patination on the timber. The underside of the frame often reveals age-darkened wood and historical upholstery tack marks.

These armchairs function well as accent seating in a formal living space, flanking a fireplace, or placed as carver chairs at the head and foot of a dining table. Their dark timber creates visual contrast when paired with contemporary neutral walls and light flooring.

Wood frames should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and nourished annually with clear beeswax polish. To prevent joint shrinkage and fabric fading, position the seating away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight.
