Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A smokers bow armchair is a traditional 19th-century British country chair characterised by a low, continuous curved horseshoe rail, baluster turned back spindles, and a thick, saddled timber seat. Widely used in public houses, offices, and gentlemens clubs during the Victorian period, it evolved from regional Windsor chairmaking techniques.

These chairs were traditionally crafted using native British hardwoods. The thick, contoured seat is typically shaped from solid elm due to its split-resistant interlocking grain, while the turned spindles, legs, and steam-bent arm rails are commonly made from beech, ash, or oak.

Authentic Victorian examples feature hand-turned baluster spindles, wedged tenon joinery beneath the seat, and natural wear patterns on the front stretcher rail from foot placement. The seat displays heavy saddling and distinct timber grain consistent with mid-to-late 19th-century construction.

A smokers bow chair functions effectively as an accent desk chair in a contemporary home office or study. It can also be positioned in an entryway or alongside modern upholstered seating to introduce warm timber tones and historical depth.

Position the chair away from direct heat sources and damp areas to prevent wood movement or joint separation. Clean the surfaces with a dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice yearly to preserve the original patina and protect the timber finish.
