Pair of Antique Elm Captains Chairs

1900 - 1920
Description

A good quality pair of 'Smoker's Bow' or 'Captain's' armchairs dating from the late 19th / early 20th Century. They have comfortable wide and deep elm seats with turned spindles and turned legs joined by a double stretcher. They are a pleasant mellow colour with a lovely grain on the seats. Both are stamped with the maker's mark W.A to the rear of the seats.

They are approximately 31 1/2" (80cm) high and 20 1/2" (52cm) wide across the arms. The seats are approximately 17 3/4" (45cm) high and 20" (51cm) deep.

They are in good condition for their age. They have developed a lovely patina and are strong and sturdy chairs. They are not without a few small marks and knocks and signs of age and use but no major damages or anything detrimental. There are a couple of historic worm holes which have all been treated as a precaution. They have been cleaned and gently polished and are ready for use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The captains chair, closely related to the smokers bow chair, developed in the nineteenth century as a low-backed, sturdy armchair featuring turned spindles and a rounded crest rail, originally popular on steamships, in commercial offices, and in libraries.

These chairs are predominantly constructed using solid timber, frequently featuring a contoured elm seat combined with turned beech or ash for the spindles, legs, and stretchers.

Authentic period examples demonstrate distinctive wide grain patterns on solid elm seats, hand-turned spindles, wedged tenon joinery, and natural wear patterns along the armrests and lower stretchers.

A pair of captains chairs works effectively as statement seating at the ends of a dining table, beside an executive desk in a home office, or in a reading nook to introduce natural timber texture.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean microfiber cloth and apply clear beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood and maintain its patinated surface finish.
