Victorian Mahogany Framed Leather Library Chair

19th century
Description

A beautiful leather library chair dating from the mid 19th Century. It is a good comfortable chair with a mahogany frame and a deep overstuffed seat. It has a curved upholstered top rail supported by two stylised carved brackets. It stands on bulbous turned and reeded front legs with its original ceramic castors. It has been upholstered in a good quality tan leather with brass studded edges and a buttoned back. The leather is in very good condition with a lovely patina.

The chair is in good condition for its age. There are some signs of age and use, some knocks and marks here and there but no major damages or anything detrimental. There have been a couple of repairs carried out over the years but the chair is structurally sound with a sturdy frame and it displays well.

It is approximately 29" (74cm) high and 27" (69cm) deep. It is 28" (71cm) wide across the outside of the arms. The seat is approximately 17" (43cm) high.

This Victorian library chair dates from the mid 19th Century and follows a gentleman's library style. The piece is constructed from mahogany with a warm brown leather cover, finished with brass studded edges around the deep overstuffed seat and the curved top rail. The timber exhibits a rich reddish-brown tone on the show wood, visible wear including minor surface knocks and marks from age, and subtle tonal variations across the hide. The design incorporates a buttoned backrest, stylised carved scroll supports beneath the arms, bulbous turned and reeded front legs, and original ceramic castors with brass hardware. Measuring 74 cm high, 71 cm wide, and 69 cm deep, the armchair offers comfortable seating with a sturdy, structurally sound frame. Suitable for use in a study, home office, or reading corner, the chair provides a functional seating option that integrates easily with traditional or period interiors. Placed beside a desk or freestanding in a living space, the proportions accommodate daily sitting while maintaining a compact footprint. The weathered leather surface and traditional woodwork complement classic decor schemes without dominating the surrounding furniture. The piece functions effectively as a standalone accent chair or paired with matching library furnishings in a home setting.

Victorian library chairs were engineered for comfort during reading or administrative work, featuring low-slung horseshoe or tub profiles, padded armrests, deep seats, and sturdy solid timber frames.

Frames were primarily constructed from solid dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, complemented by natural leather upholstery, horsehair padding, and hand-tacked brass studding.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved decorative elements, traditional joinery, brass castors fitted to turned or fluted legs, and genuine age-related wear or patina on the timber and leather.

Position the chair beside a minimalist contemporary desk or within a study corner paired with a clean-lined floor lamp to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, dust regularly with a clean lint-free cloth, and treat periodically with a specialist leather conditioner.
