Pair of 19th Century Walnut Reclining Armchairs, C1860

19th century
Description

Stunning Pair of 19th-Century Victorian Walnut Colonial Reclining Armchairs, circa 1860

This rare and exceptional pair of 19th-century colonial Victorian walnut reclining armchairs beautifully encapsulates the luxury and craftsmanship of the period. Generously scaled and wonderfully comfortable, they combine refined design with the relaxed elegance of colonial campaign furniture.

Each chair features a flat lath slatted back with turned outer uprights, sweeping shaped arms, and a leather seat with a loose, hand dyed buttoned leather cushion. The frames are crafted from richly figured walnut, finely shaped throughout and raised on elegant front and rear splayed legs joined by a turned stretcher, with a matching flat lath slatted footrest for full lounging comfort.

Retaining their original deep brown leather buttoned cushions and superb patina, the chairs exude warmth, character, and authenticity. Leather squab cushions with float buttons enhance both comfort and style, while the original colour, leather seat, back, and cushions all speak to the quality and integrity of the piece. Seat height is a comfortable 55cm.

Designed to recline smoothly to an almost fully horizontal position, these armchairs offer true relaxation. In excellent condition and crafted in England circa 1860, this magnificent pair is a striking representation of colonial Victorian design. Perfect for a library, drawing room, living room, covered garden terrace, or patio, they make a powerful statement wherever placed.

A highly desirable pair of period armchairs, beautifully made, wonderfully comfortable, and even more impressive in person, with professionally hand dyed leather in a warm, deep brown tone that enhances their exceptional character.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the Victorian era, reclining armchairs were engineered for comfort and reading, featuring adjustable backrests, mechanical ratchets, and extendable footrests crafted from fine hardwoods like walnut or mahogany.

These armchairs were typically constructed using solid timber frames such as walnut, oak, or mahogany, fitted with metal adjustment ratchets and upholstered with leather or horsehair-stuffed cushions.

Authentic period examples feature period-appropriate joinery, original iron or brass ratchet mechanisms beneath the armrests, hand-carved decorative elements, and natural surface patina consistent with age.

Position these sculptural armchairs alongside a clean-lined modern sofa or within a dedicated library space to create a thoughtful dialogue between historical craftsmanship and contemporary aesthetics.

Dust the wood regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically, while treating the leather seat cushions with a specialized conditioner to maintain flexibility.
