This mid-nineteenth-century country house armchair dates to 1850 and is attributed to Howard & Sons of London. The frame is upholstered in a warm brown hide leather, accented by deep buttoning on the arched backrest and hand-applied brass studding along the armrests and seat rail. The structure stands on turned walnut front legs fitted with brass castors and splayed rear legs, with a serial stock number stamped on the left back leg. Traditional firm innards support the upholstered seat, which has a 35 cm seat height. Measuring 81 cm high, 77 cm wide, and 87 cm deep, the armchair suits a traditional gentleman's library, study, or drawing room reading corner. It provides an imposing yet comfortable seat for daily use while displaying classic Victorian craftsmanship. The proportions allow placement beside a fireplace, writing desk, or bookcase, anchoring a traditional seating arrangement.

Mid-19th-century Victorian armchairs are defined by deep buttoning, low seats, heavily padded armrests, and turned timber legs mounted on brass castors, engineered primarily for informal parlour or library lounging.

Chairs from this period typically featured solid hardwood frames such as beech or oak, stuffed with natural horsehair and fiber, supported by hand-tied steel coil springs and upholstered in leather or wool velvet.

Authentic pieces often feature maker stamps on the inside of the rear legs, stamped brass castors, branded hessian under-lining, and high-tensile coil spring construction methods specific to the firm.

A Victorian leather armchair acts as a tactile focal point when placed alongside clean contemporary architecture, minimalist floor lamps, and neutral architectural backgrounds.

Leather upholstery should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth, treated periodically with a high-quality leather conditioner, and kept away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or cracking.
