Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Segmented timber frame: traditional circular joinery of nineteenth-century construction.
White gesso visible where gilding has rubbed on spherules: period water-gilding ground.
Reeded ebonised inner slip: classic Regency design retained across the Victorian era.
Natural movement lines across the frame joints: timber shrinkage over many decades.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Regency wall mirror is a circular convex piece crafted from giltwood, gesso, glass, and ebonised wood. The gilded frame has spherule ornamentation around the outer edge, surrounding a swept gold-finished body and a reeded ebonised inner slip holding the convex glass plate. The frame largely retains its original gilt finish, showing visible age including gesso losses on several of the balls, natural movement cracks at the original frame joints, and an old later addition plywood back. The mirror measures 63 cm in diameter with a 7 cm depth. This grand statement piece is designed to hang vertically on a wall above the mantel in a living room, hallway, or dining room, bringing classical decorative character and reflective light to interior spaces.

FAQs

These mirrors were constructed using carved timber frames overlaid with moulded gesso and real gold leaf, often incorporating an inner reeded or ribbed ebonised wooden slip to encapsulate the curved mirror plate.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-carving or hand-applied moulding, natural crazing or distress on the gilt gesso layer, aged oxidation or distortion in the glass, and timber backboards exhibiting historical shrinkage.

Mounting a convex mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece or console table creates a central focal point, allowing the curved glass to catch ambient light and reflect broad room vistas.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a soft dry brush to prevent removing the delicate gold leaf, avoiding water or solvent cleaners, and wipe the glass using a barely damp microfibre cloth.

A convex mirror features an outward-curving glass lens that reflects an expanded field of view, gaining widespread popularity in Western Europe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries within Regency and Georgian interiors.
