Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth century wall mirror possesses a rectangular profile and a gilded wooden frame displaying leaf motifs, rosette bosses, and beaded moulding in a gold colourway. The moulded gold leaf frame holds replacement glass, accompanied by decorative sunflowers to each corner and centre, and four wall brackets fitted to the sides. Measuring 158 cm high, 122 cm wide, and 6 cm deep, the piece adopts a Neoclassical and grand Regency style. Suitable for placement above the mantel, the mirror functions in both antique and modern rooms as an over mantel mirror. The design accommodates positioning either vertically or horizontally. Solid and sturdy, the woodwork remains free of woodworm with original gilt present.

FAQs

Neoclassical giltwood wall mirrors are characterised by linear rectangular shapes inspired by classical Greek and Roman architecture. Common features include bead-and-reel moulding, leaf motifs, and decorative corner rosettes or paterae finished in gold leaf.

Traditional giltwood frames were constructed from carved timber, typically pine or lime, coated with multiple layers of gesso plaster. Water gilding or oil gilding was then applied using genuine gold leaf burnished to achieve varied highlights and texture.

Authentic gilding displays subtle wear where underlying red or grey clay bole shows through on high points. Authentic mercury glass or early silvered glass often exhibits minor foxing, black speckling, and gentle light distortion consistent with age.

Positioning a structured giltwood mirror above a contemporary console table or fireplace creates a balanced focal point. The metallic texture contrasts effectively against painted or dark moody wall tones, enhancing available room light.

Giltwood frames should only be dusted with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquids or spray polishes that dissolve gesso. Clean mirror glass by lightly dampening a cloth rather than spraying water directly onto the frame joints.
