This early 19th-century Swedish giltwood wall mirror follows a neoclassical design, measuring 158.8 cm high and 71.1 cm wide. The gold-finished wooden frame exhibits a substantial domed crest featuring a narrow acanthus moulding around a large lunette fan sunburst, positioned above a carved diamond and harebell frieze. Two original mirror plates sit within a slender foliate slip, flanked by reeded pilasters with ribbon-tied mouldings, and rest upon a moulded apron base. The original gilding shows visible signs of age and wear. Suitable for placement above a sideboard in a dining room or living area, this decorative piece brings classical proportions and historic character to interior walls.

FAQs

Swedish Neoclassical wall mirrors from the nineteenth century are characterised by symmetrical architectural forms, classical column side pilasters, and decorative pediments such as lunettes or sunburst motifs influenced by Gustavian and French Empire designs.

These mirror frames were carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso, and finished using water gilding with gold leaf applied over a coloured clay base known as bole.

Authentic period mirrors feature signs of hand-carved joinery, natural wear or oxidisation to the gilding showing the underlying bole or gesso, sectional glass plates, and original timber backboards.

A tall giltwood mirror functions effectively as a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantelpiece, positioned over a hall console table, or hung between tall windows to maximize natural light.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, commercial chemical cleaners, or damp cloths which can dissolve water gilding and damage the underlying gesso.
