Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Swedish Neoclassical wall mirror from 1860 combines dark brown mahogany with gold-toned gilded wood and an original rectangular mirror plate. The upper cresting displays an urn finial with flowers, rococo style figures, gesso, and elaborate scrollwork. Roman style designs surround the glass, complemented by carved rosette flower heads at each corner. The lower section incorporates a central figure head of Caesar, accompanied by scroll apron motifs and foliate patterns. The piece measures 136 cm high and 54 cm wide. Positioned in a contemporary interior, this wall mirror suits placement above a sideboard in a dining room or living area. The dark timber and bright gilding suit traditional or transitional settings where statement decorative hardware and classic wooden frames provide a focal point. Wall mounting allows the vertical proportions to balance interior spaces while reflecting light into the room.

FAQs

Swedish Neoclassical and Gustavian mirrors from the late 18th and early 19th centuries draw heavy inspiration from French Louis XVI and Empire designs, featuring gilded wood accents, mahogany veneers, classical urn finials, and elaborate scrollwork.

These mirrors were constructed using softwood or mahogany frames embellished with carved wood or gesso ornamentation, water-gilded gold leaf, and mercury-backed glass mirror plates.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut joinery on the backboard, natural wear on the gilding revealing the underlying red or grey clay bole, and light oxidation or foxing on the glass plate.

Position the mirror above a console table, fireplace mantle, or hallway sideboard to maximise light reflection and establish a structured focal point within contemporary or period interiors.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft dry brush, avoiding water, household polish, or damp cloths that can compromise delicate gesso or dissolve the original gold leaf layer.
