This Victorian overmantel mirror dates from 1860, originating as a large English country house piece designed for placement above a mantel. Constructed from giltwood and gesso with water gilding, the frame features a bright gold colour and an arched top profile. The detailed decoration includes elaborate foliate moulding running down the vertical sides and along the curved top edge, a beaded border, and distinct corner blocks at the base. It retains its original mirror glass plate and backboards, showing typical signs of age across the gilded surfaces. Measuring 155 cm high, 150 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, the mirror rests easily against a living room wall or functions as a striking decorative focal point in a reception hallway or dining room.

An arched overmantel mirror is a decorative wall mirror featuring a curved upper profile, designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece in nineteenth-century interiors.

Nineteenth-century gilt mirrors were typically constructed from carved timber frames coated in gesso composition moulding, which was then layered with thin gold leaf using water or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature signs of natural age including light oxidisation or foxing on the glass, subtle wear on the gilt gesso exposing the reddish clay bole beneath, and traditional timber backboards.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace or console table to reflect natural light, balance proportions, and serve as an architectural focal point alongside contemporary or period furnishings.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical solvents, or liquid cleaners that could dissolve the delicate gesso and gold leaf.
