Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror, traditionally known as chimney glass, is a specialised mirror proportioned to hang or rest directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Emerging as a prominent architectural feature in the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors were designed to reflect light from candles and fixtures, amplifying illumination across high-ceilinged reception rooms.

Victorian gilt overmantel mirrors were constructed using a wooden core, often pine or oak, coated with layers of gesso (a mixture of chalk and binder) to allow for detailed carving and moulding. Gold leaf was applied over the gesso using water or oil gilding techniques, housing silvered or mercury glass plates.

Authentic 19th-century pieces usually exhibit hand-carved wood cores, naturally aged gesso showing fine cracking (craquelure), and authentic leaf wear revealing underlying red or grey clay bole. Additionally, original backboards often consist of multiple pine planks with hand-cut nails, and the glass may show gentle foxing or dark spot desilverization.

An antique gilt overmantel mirror can be mounted above a minimalist fireplace hearth or placed atop a modern dining room sideboard to create visual contrast. Pairing ornate gilded frames with neutral walls and contemporary tailored upholstery creates an eclectic, layered interior aesthetic.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, liquid cleaners, or abrasive cloths that can dissolve or lift delicate gold leaf. Mirror glass should be cleaned by spraying glass cleaner onto a microfiber cloth rather than directly onto the glass to prevent moisture from seeping into the frame joints.
