Pair of Swedish Art Deco Armchairs in Leather and Satin Birch

1920 - 1940
Description

A very stylish and extremely well made pair of Swedish Art Deco armchairs in leather and satin birch. They were recently imported from Sweden, they date from the 1930’s,

The quality is outstanding, they are well sprung and very comfortable. The satin birch frames wrap around the entire sides and backs, they are very sturdy and robust chairs. The satin birch has an exquisite colour tone and stunning grain patterns.

We have had the frames stripped and re-polished to a very high standard, they were re-upholstered fairly recently in a cream leather with black piping. The condition is excellent, with just some minor wear and a few extremely faint marks to the leather here and there, seen in the images.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Swedish Art Deco, often associated with the Swedish Grace movement of the 1920s and 1930s, combines classical proportions with simplified geometric forms. It features smooth timber veneers, refined upholstery, and clean architectural silhouettes.

Craftsmen typically utilized light-coloured native hardwoods such as satin birch, flame birch, and ash alongside leather or velvet upholstery. Frames were constructed using solid timber joined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic pieces feature light-toned timber veneers with distinct grain patterns, solid wooden block feet, and structured square or curved armrests. Examination of joint construction and internal webbing under the seat frame can confirm period authenticity.

Pair these architectural armchairs with low-profile contemporary sofas or minimalist stone coffee tables to highlight their geometric frames. The neutral cream leather and warm timber tone complement both neutral monochromatic schemes and bolder colour palettes.

Clean leather surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a neutral leather conditioner periodically to prevent drying. Keep satin birch veneer out of direct sunlight to prevent uneven fading and clean timber surfaces with a mild wood polish.
