Pair of Art Deco Armchairs in Satin Birch and Leather

1920 - 1940
Description

A stylish and very well made pair of Art Deco armchairs in satin birch and leather. They were recently imported from Sweden, they date from the 1930’s.

The quality is excellent, they are well sprung and very comfortable. The sweeping satin birch arms curve beautifully down to the front legs, giving them a sleek and curvaceous look. The satin birch has a lovely colour tone and wonderful grain patterns.

We have had the frames stripped and re-polished to a very high standard, and they have been re-upholstered in a gorgeous brown leather by the previous owner. We have had the leather revived and enhanced by our leather restorer. The condition is excellent, with only some extremely minor wear remaining here and there.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco armchairs are characterised by geometric silhouettes, streamlined curves, and bold sculptural profiles that emerged during the interwar period. Designers frequently integrated polished decorative hardwoods, such as satin birch or walnut, alongside rich leather upholstery.

Makers utilised fine timber veneers such as satin birch, burr walnut, and rosewood, often combined with solid timber frames. Upholstery featured natural leather or heavy woven textiles supported by traditional coil springs and hair stuffing.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-veneered surfaces, steam-bent wood details, and traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints. Weight, natural patina, age-appropriate wear to the timber finish, and internal coil spring construction further distinguish period examples.

A pair of Art Deco armchairs can serve as sculptural focal points in contemporary living rooms, creating visual contrast against neutral walls. Pairing polished timber and dark leather with minimalist side tables balances historical character with modern design aesthetics.

Apply a specialised leather conditioner periodically to prevent cracking and maintain flexibility, keeping the upholstery away from direct heat sources and sunlight. Clean the satin birch woodwork with a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish sparingly.
