Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Ball-mounted projecting cornice: architectural profile that fixes the early 19th-century origin.
Applied classical figures in composition: decorative method popular across the 1810s.
Fine surface crazing to the paint: natural drying of old gesso ground.
Gilding rubbed thin on raised mouldings: gentle cleaning over many decades.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This nineteenth-century Regency overmantel mirror displays an off-white painted finish with water-gilded parcel gilt details. The rectangular wooden structure measures 93 cm high, 137 cm wide, and 9 cm deep, incorporating three original mercury glass plates, gesso relief carvings, and a projecting cornice set with turned gilt balls. A central circular aperture with a sunburst carved design and a gilt garland surround sits between two rectangular side mirror plates, flanked by fluted Doric pilasters. The upper section contains a neoclassical figural frieze depicting dancing maidens and a tree alongside side panels showing figures holding a harp and doves, all in gold leaf against the off-white painted ground. Positioned traditionally above a fireplace mantel in a reception room or drawing room, this grand piece commands attention as a focal point. The composition offers functional reflection while introducing classical architectural elements to an interior. The combination of off-white paint, gleaming gold leaf details, and distinct geometrical framing complements both traditional period properties and eclectic contemporary spaces.

FAQs

Regency overmantel mirrors are characterised by low, wide architectural proportions designed to span the width of a fireplace mantel. Popular during the early nineteenth century, they frequently feature neoclassical motifs, classical relief friezes, projecting ball cornices, and fluted columns or pilasters.

These frames were typically constructed from carved softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso and chalk render. Selected decorative elements were highlighted with genuine gold leaf (parcel gilding), while surrounding areas were finished in neutral paint, housing hand-blown mercury mirror glass plates.

Authentic period examples generally display original divided plate glass with slight foxing or grey speckling, hand-carved backboards, and natural wood shrinkage joints. The parcel gilding often shows subtle wear or oxidisation where the clay bole beneath the gold leaf becomes visible over time.

Mount the mirror directly above a chimneypiece or modern console table to serve as a focal point. Its light painted frame and architectural detailing pair well with contemporary neutral plaster walls, contrasting modern upholstery while adding structural grandeur.

Dust the frame gently using a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding moisture or liquid cleaners that could dissolve the water-gilded gesso base. Keep the mirror away from direct heat sources or damp masonry to prevent warping of the timber backing and flaking of the gilt render.
