Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian overmantel mirror dates from the nineteenth century in a Regency style. The horizontal rectangular piece comprises a gold-leaf-finished giltwood frame housing an original glass mirror plate with visible foxing, set above removable white ceramic bun feet. The frame displays rope-twist moulding, beaded edging, leafy scrolls at the base corners, and carved scroll side feet, complemented by original backboards and wall fixing brackets. Measuring 83 cm in height, 127 cm in width, and 7 cm in depth, the item provides a functional and decorative accessory for domestic interiors. Homeowners place a piece of this type above a mantelpiece in a living room, drawing room, or dining room to reflect light and add period character to a wall.

FAQs

Place the mirror resting directly on a fireplace mantel or mounted above a low console table to reflect natural light and create textural contrast against minimalist or dark-painted walls.

Clean the glass panel carefully using a lightly damp microfibre cloth while avoiding the frame, and gently remove dust from the gilded surface using only a soft dry bristle brush to prevent lifting the fragile gold leaf.

Authentic period mirrors display subtle oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate, visible reddish or grey clay bole showing through worn areas of gilding, and historic timber backboards attached with hand-forged fittings.

Giltwood frames were constructed using hand-carved timber or molded gesso applied over softwood frames, which were then coated with clay bole, water-gilded with gold leaf, and fitted with silvered mirror glass.

An overmantel mirror is a wide reflective panel specifically proportioned and designed to sit directly above or rest upon a fireplace mantelpiece, serving as a focal point in traditional reception rooms.
