Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring a flat base and proportional width to complement the hearth below. This design gained widespread popularity during the Georgian and Regency periods, continuing through the Victorian era as a central architectural feature in formal receiving rooms.

Traditional gilt mirrors were constructed using a carved timber frame, usually pine or oak, coated with layers of chalk gesso and clay bole. Thin leaves of genuine gold were subsequently applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques over the prepared surface.

Authentic period pieces typically show hand-carved joinery, natural wear revealing the reddish clay bole beneath high points of the gold leaf, and light foxing or patination on the original mirror glass. Modern reproductions often feature cast resin mouldings and uniform spray gilding.

Position the mirror centrally above a living room fireplace or resting securely on a substantial console table to anchor the room. Combining the gilded finish with muted wall shades, textured plaster, or contemporary art creates an effective balance between historic character and modern design.

Dust the frame lightly using a dry, soft camel-hair brush or microfibre duster, avoiding liquids, solvents, or abrasive polishes that can degrade the gold leaf and gesso. Clean the glass plate separately with a damp cloth, taking care not to allow moisture to seep behind the frame rebate.
