Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian arched overmantel mirror, traditionally known as a chimney glass, is designed to rest directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Characteristics include a low rectangular base, an arched top frame, gilded wood or gesso ornamentation, and side architectural detail such as columns or pilasters.

These mirrors were typically constructed from carved pine or lime wood coated with gesso, a plaster-like composition. Decorative details were sculpted from gesso, gilded using thin sheets of gold leaf, and fitted with silvered or mercury glass plates backed by solid timber boards.

Authentic nineteenth-century mirrors feature original pine backing boards, subtle age-related tarnishing or foxing on the glass plate, and natural wear or red bole showing through the gilded gesso layers. Construction often reveals hand-cut joinery and minor shrinkage cracks consistent with historical timber.

Place the mirror directly on a chimney breast or mantelpiece to anchor the architectural focal point of a room. Contrast the intricate gilded frame against modern neutral paint tones, contemporary artwork, or minimal stone surrounds to balance modern and historical elements.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding water or chemical polish which can dissolve historical gesso and gold leaf. Spray glass cleaner sparingly onto a microfibre cloth rather than directly onto the mirror plate to prevent liquid from seeping into the frame rebate.
