Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a broad decorative wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised in the 19th century, these mirrors reflected ambient light from chandeliers and candles to brighten reception rooms.

19th-century gilt frames were typically constructed from carved softwood or pine covered with layers of gesso plaster. The decorative surface was finished with hand-applied gold leaf, while the mirror plate was silvered glass.

Authentic period mirrors demonstrate age-related characteristics such as minor wear to the gilding revealing the underlying reddish clay bole, subtle foxing on the glass, and hand-cut timber backing panels.

Position the mirror centrally above a living room fireplace mantle or atop a hallway console table. The ornate gilded frame creates a structural contrast against contemporary neutral paint schemes or dark accent walls.

Dust giltwood frames using a soft, dry camel-hair brush without applying water or chemical solvents, which can dissolve the gesso substrate. Mirror glass should be cleaned using a damp microfibre cloth, keeping moisture away from the frame edge.
