Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a large decorative wall mirror specifically designed to hang above a fireplace hearth or mantelpiece. Popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors served to reflect light and act as a focal architectural feature in formal reception rooms.

19th-century gilt frames were typically constructed from a carved wooden base substrate overlaid with gesso, a plaster-like mixture of chalk and glue. Detailed ornamental motifs were moulded or carved into the gesso before fine gold leaf was applied using traditional water gilding techniques.

Authentic antique gilt mirrors often show signs of natural aging, such as subtle distress or fine cracking in the gesso surface and rubbing through to the underlying reddish clay bole layer. The reverse side usually features hand-planed backboards, period fasteners, and authentic light tarnish or foxing on the glass plate.

A large antique overmantel mirror can be mounted above a fireplace or placed over a hallway console table to create visual contrast. Leaning the mirror against a prominent feature wall also adds visual depth and architectural structure without requiring permanent wall anchorage.

Clean gilded gesso frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth to remove dust without disturbing delicate gold leaf layers. Avoid moisture, household glass cleaners, or abrasive polishes on the gilded areas, as water can dissolve historical gesso binders.
