Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian overmantel mirror is designed specifically to sit directly above a chimney breast. These pieces frequently incorporate architectural elements such as fluted side columns, pilasters, moulded cornices, and decorative gesso spandrels finished in gold leaf.

During the 19th century, frames were typically constructed from pine or lime wood, shaped, and coated with gesso (a mixture of chalk and binder). Intricate architectural details were hand-carved or cast in gesso before water gilding or oil gilding was applied using gold leaf.

Authentic period examples exhibit subtle craquelure across the gesso surface, light wear showing the reddish bole underlying the gilding, and original dark foxing or desilvering on the glass plate. The reverse usually features hand-planed timber backboards fixed with historic square-headed nails or screws.

Interior designers often mount overmantel mirrors above modern or period fireplaces to draw the eye upward and reflect natural light. Pairing an elaborate gilt frame against contemporary wall paint creates a balanced focal point combining classic texture with modern contrast.

Giltwood and gesso surfaces must be cleaned gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster. Water and chemical liquid cleaners should never be applied to gilded areas, as moisture dissolves gesso and strips the fragile gold leaf.
