Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Overmantel mirrors gained widespread popularity during the nineteenth century as focal points above fireplace chimneypieces. Designed to reflect daylight and candlelight across formal reception rooms, they featured elaborate gilded frames crafted from wood and gesso, reflecting styles ranging from Neoclassical to Rococo Revival.

Traditional construction involved a carved timber substrate coated with layers of gesso (a mixture of glue binder and chalk). Ornamental details like rope twist borders and crests were moulded from gesso, which was then water-gilded using thin sheets of gold leaf before housing mercury or silvered glass plates.

Authentic period pieces display natural age characteristics, such as light crazing or fine cracks in the gesso surface and soft wear to the gilding revealing reddish bole clay underneath. The original mirror plate often shows subtle oxidisation or foxing spots, accompanied by hand-sawn wooden backboards.

Mount the mirror directly above a stone fireplace, mantelpiece, or long marble console table to establish a strong central anchor. The warm tones of gilded wood contrast effectively against both neutral lime-wash paint and deep, dramatic wall colours.

Dust giltwood surfaces gently using a soft, dry feather duster or dry painters brush, avoiding water or chemical sprays which dissolve gesso and remove gold leaf. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a lightly damp microfiber cloth, ensuring moisture does not touch the gilded edge.
