This 19th-century French arch top mirror brings classical character to a room, designed with a giltwood and composition frame in a warm gold finish. The grand piece stands 211 cm high, 156 cm wide, and 15 cm deep, offering substantial presence for interior placement. Intricate details shape its appearance, including a prominent carved botanical fern cresting at the apex, a continuous beaded moulding along the arched frame, and small curved feet at the base supporting the structure. Positioned in a formal living area or bedroom, this overmantel mirror reflects natural light while adding architectural depth against a wall. The antique glass surface rests securely within the heavy moulded border, creating a traditional focal point above a fireplace or low console table. Maintenance involves gentle dusting of the gilded surfaces with a dry cloth to preserve the decorative composition work and the delicate contours of the fern cartouche over time.

A 19th-century French overmantel mirror typically features an arched or rectangular top designed to sit flush above a fireplace mantelpiece. Frames from this period were crafted from wood and gesso, finished with hand-applied gold leaf, and frequently featured classical or botanical crestings such as ferns, floral swags, or shell motifs.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or oak frames coated with layers of gesso (a mixture of chalk and glue) and moulded composition detail. Water gilding or oil gilding using genuine gold leaf was applied to the surface, and the reflective pane was typically silvered plate glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit evidence of age on the reverse, such as original pine backing boards, hand-cut nails, and natural oxidisation or foxing on the glass. The gilding often shows subtle wear where the red or grey clay bole underlayer shows through the gold leaf on raised edges.

Positioning a large gilt mirror above a clean-lined mantelpiece or console table creates an architectural focal point that balances historic detail with modern minimalism. Leaning a tall arched mirror against a plain rendered wall adds depth and reflects natural light across the room.

Dust giltwood frames lightly with a soft, dry feather duster or soft camel-hair brush, avoiding water, solvents, or commercial polishes which dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Clean the mirror glass by applying glass cleaner sparingly to a microfibre cloth rather than spraying directly onto the glass.
