An Attractive Early 19thc Gilt Framed Mirror Height 195 Cm

Early 19th-Century Giltwood Mirror, circa 1820

A highly decorative and impressive early 19th-century giltwood mirror, circa 1820, retaining its original gilding and mirror plate.

The generously proportioned frame is richly ornamented in the exuberant Regency taste, with a shaped and arched upper section surmounted by an elaborate pierced crest. The cresting incorporates scrolling foliage and fantastical animal and bird-like forms, with further opposing figures perched at either side. Bold acanthus scrolls and finely modelled foliate decoration continue around the frame, terminating in particularly handsome carved flourishes to the lower corners.

The original gilded surface has a wonderfully warm, mellow colour, with the subtle variation and character that comes from two centuries of age. Particularly desirable is the survival of the original mirror glass, which has developed the gentle softness and atmospheric quality associated with early 19th-century plate.

At almost two metres high, this is a striking architectural mirror, substantial enough to become a focal point within an entrance hall, drawing room or dining room, while the delicacy and movement of its carved decoration prevent it from appearing overly heavy.
