This late Victorian wall mirror follows a traditional English Country House design, constructed from a wooden base covered in gilt gesso and inset with clear mirror glass. The gold-finished frame has a rope-twist outer edge, an inner marginal glass border, and classical leaf tie-bars with paterae rosette decoration. It measures 114 cm high by 81 cm wide and 4 cm deep, and the sectional configuration allows the piece to be hung in either portrait or landscape orientation depending on the room layout. Such a versatile wall mirror suits placement above the mantel in a drawing room, dining room, or entrance hall to reflect light and expand the visual space. The classical decorative elements complement period interiors alongside traditional woodwork and antique furniture.

A Victorian gilt gesso mirror is a decorative wall glass framed in wood coated with gesso, a smooth mixture of plaster and glue, which is sculpted into intricate details and layered with gold leaf.

These mirrors were constructed using softwood frames, sculpted gesso moulding, and water or oil gilding using thin gold leaf. The reflective surface was traditionally created using silvered glass plates.

Authentic period pieces show subtle cracking called craquelure in the gesso surface, natural wear exposing the red or grey bole beneath the gold leaf, and light oxidation or foxing on the original mirror glass.

Place the mirror above a modern hallway console or fireplace mantelpiece to create a striking focal point, allowing the gilded frame to contrast against clean lines and plain modern walls.

Dust the frame regularly with a soft, dry brush. Never use water, liquid cleaners, or household sprays on gilded surfaces, as moisture dissolves the gesso binder and damages the gold leaf.
