This late 19th-century French Provincial bedside table dates to 1890 and is fashioned from oak in a warm brown timber colour. The piece stands on slender cabriole legs and has a single drawer fitted with a small round brass knob. A scalloped gallery tops the structure, incorporating open cut-out handholes on both sides and an interior shelf, while visible signs of age appear across the wooden surface. The table measures 76 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 36 cm deep. Placed at the end of a sofa or beside a bed in a modern home, this piece offers functional surface space and storage. The compact footprint fits easily into smaller bedrooms or living spaces, while the open shelf and drawer accommodate books, reading glasses, or small personal items. The provincial style blends with traditional or rustic interior schemes.

FAQs

French Provincial bedside tables typically feature functional galleried tops, graceful cabriole legs, and understated carved aprons. Originating in 18th-century French regional workshops, these designs combine practical utility with balanced proportions.

Traditional pieces are predominantly constructed from solid native hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or beech. Construction techniques typically include hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, mortise and tenon joinery, and solid timber back panels.

Authentic Louis XV style furniture features subtle S-curved cabriole legs, asymmetrical carved scrolls, and an absence of straight lines. Examining drawer construction, hand-carved joinery details, and natural timber wear helps confirm period construction.

A French oak bedside table can be integrated alongside modern upholstered beds to add texture and historical contrast. It can also function as a compact side table in a living space beside an armchair or sofa.

Maintain solid oak furniture by dusting regularly with a clean, lint-free cloth and applying beeswax periodically to nourish the wood finish. Avoid positioning the piece near direct heat sources or in areas with extreme humidity fluctuations.
