FAQs

French bedside tables, or tables de chevet, from the 1930s often combine traditional provincial forms with streamlined proportions. Common characteristics include high-set single drawers, open compartments, and elongated cabriole legs crafted from regional hardwoods like cherry.

French cabinetmakers frequently utilised solid cherry, walnut, or oak for regional furniture production. Hardware typically consists of turned wooden knobs, cast brass pull handles, or simple bone escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature tight grain patterns and a warm amber-red hue characteristic of native European cherry wood. Hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and uniform age-related oxidisation inside drawers signal period construction.

Tall, slender nightstands work effectively beside high-profile upholstered beds or modern divans. Their narrow footprints make them ideal for compact alcoves, while the open cubby allows for tidy book storage alongside modern lighting.

Maintain cherry timber by dusting regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep pieces away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent uneven fading or timber shrinkage.
