This pair of late 19th-century French Provincial bedside cupboards brings traditional continental utility to the bedroom. Each tall wooden cabinet has an inset white marble top, a single upper drawer with a central brass drop handle, a panelled cupboard door below with a decorative escutcheon and handle, and an open lower shelf supported by slender cabriole legs. The rich warm brown timber shows distinct grain patterns across the front panels. Measuring 87 cm high, 41 cm wide, and 41 cm deep, these compact bedside tables fit neatly beside a bed to hold a lamp and night-time essentials, providing both surface space and enclosed storage within reach.

FAQs

French bedside cupboards, traditionally referred to as tables de chevet or pot cupboards, originated in the 18th century as utilitarian furniture designed to sit next to the bed frame. Marble tops were introduced to protect the timber surfaces from liquid spills, heat, and daily wear.

These cabinets are typically constructed from hardwoods such as walnut, oak, mahogany, or fruitwood, often featuring decorative veneers. Tops are traditionally fitted with inset or floating slabs of natural marble, accompanied by cast brass or bronze hardware.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawer construction, hand-carved wood mouldings, and original marble tops cut to fit the specific cabinet outline. The presence of natural patina on the timber and oxidisation on brass handles also indicates genuine age.

In modern schemes, a pair of French bedside cupboards can be placed flanking a upholstered bed frame to add historical depth and texture. The marble surface accommodates modern lighting fixtures, while internal drawers keep bedside clutter hidden.

Marble surfaces should be wiped clean with a damp cloth and mild pH-neutral cleaner to prevent staining from acidic liquids. The timber frame requires periodic application of natural beeswax polish to maintain wood hydration and finish clarity.
