Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pair of French Louis XVI style marquetry bedside tables, also known as chevets, bring classical continental elegance to a bedroom or living space. Each cabinet has a serpentine-shaped front and curved sides, standing on sabre-shaped legs and finished with mottled honey-coloured marble tops. The warm brown wooden surfaces display intricate floral marquetry veneer across two drawers, complemented by decorative brass handles and ornate ormolu mounts at the corners. The mottled marble top provides a durable and decorative surface for everyday bedside items such as a reading lamp or books. Practical in proportions, these bedside chests measure 75 cm in height, 50 cm in width, and 35 cm in depth, fitting neatly beside a standard double or king-size bed. They function ideally as bedside tables holding night-time essentials, or as decorative lamp tables flanking a sofa or console in a drawing room. The combination of warm inlaid woods, veined marble, and polished metal fittings suits traditional, French chateau, or classic interior schemes.

FAQs

French chevets are bedside tables or cabinets that originated in the eighteenth century to hold night-time essentials. Features often include cabriole or tapered legs, marquetry wood veneers, marble tops, and decorative brass mounts.

Traditional French chevets feature hardwood frames layered with decorative veneers such as kingwood, rosewood, or walnut in parquetry patterns. They typically include polished marble tops for durability and cast brass or bronze ormolu fittings.

Authentic pieces showcase hand-cut marquetry inlays, hand-dovetailed drawer joints, and solid brass or bronze mounts secured with original screws. The marble tops often feature hand-chiselled undersides rather than smooth machine finishes.

Position the pair on either side of a bed to introduce historical character into a room scheme. Complement the wood veneers and marble tops with neutral bedding and metal lighting fixtures.

Clean the wooden marquetry with a soft dry cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly to preserve the veneer. Use a pH-neutral cleaner on the marble top and protect both surfaces from moisture and direct sunlight.
