This pair of French bedside tables dates from 1930 and follows a French Provincial style. Fashioned from warm brown cherry wood, the pieces exhibit a smooth polished finish and feature single drawers with small round white knobs, open storage niches below, and slender cabriole legs with curved aprons. Visible details include shaped framing and clean structural lines. The bedside tables measure 25cm wide by 26.5cm deep by 69.5cm high. Suitable for placement in a bedroom next to a bed, these compact stands provide practical surface space and storage. The open shelving accommodates nighttime essentials while the upper drawers keep smaller items neatly tucked away. Their slim proportions ensure they fit comfortably in tighter spaces within domestic interiors.

FAQs

A French chevet is a slim bedside table or nightstand originating in French cabinetmaking traditions, designed to hold lighting and bedtime essentials adjacent to a bed.

Cabinetmakers during this era frequently utilised solid fruitwoods such as cherry, alongside oak and walnut, using traditional joinery techniques including mortise and tenon joints.

Authentic examples feature contoured cabriole legs, carved scalloped aprons, hand-fitted drawer construction, and natural surface wear consistent with age.

These tall, slender tables can flank a modern upholstered bed to introduce warm timber tones, or function as compact side tables in narrow living room alcoves.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically, keeping the wood positioned away from direct radiator heat to avoid drying.
