This Regency carved giltwood convex mirror dates from the early 19th century and exemplifies the grand style of the period. The gold-finished frame incorporates a boldly carved eagle cresting with outstretched wings resting on decorative scrolls, ball ornamentation, an ebonised inner slip, and a gadrooned apron with fluted foliage at the base. The original convex mercury mirror plate shows a soft dappled effect, wear, and areas of foxing across its reflective surface, alongside minor surface marks on the giltwood frame. Measuring 104 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 22 cm deep, the mirror comes ready to hang. In a modern interior, this piece serves as a striking decorative wall mirror suited for placement above a mantel in a living room, drawing room, or hallway. The reflective convex glass adds depth and reflects light into the surrounding space while providing a distinct historical focal point on a wall.

Popularised in early 19th-century Britain, Regency convex mirrors are circular wall mirrors featuring convex glass set within a decorative carved giltwood frame, designed to reflect ambient light throughout a room.

These mirrors were crafted using carved timber finished with gold leaf gilding, ebonised interior reeded slips, and hand-blown convex mirror glass.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit original mirror glass with natural foxing, carved wood construction rather than modern moulded resin, and hand-applied gold leaf showing subtle wear on high points.

A Regency convex mirror functions as a focal point when mounted above a fireplace mantel, positioned over a console table in an entrance hall, or integrated into a traditional gallery wall.

Dust the carved frame gently using a soft, dry microfibre brush, completely avoiding liquid cleaners, polish, or water that could lift or damage the water-gilded surface.
