Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Carved scroll supports and foliate feet: typical Victorian rococo revival cabinet work.
Serpentine base with stepped moulded edge: mid-Victorian dressing table styling.
Solid wood back panel held by small countersunk screws: traditional period framing.
Soft wear to the turned mahogany side knobs: regular adjustment over time.

This Victorian miniature dressing mirror dates from 1860 in the English Country House style. Constructed from warm brown mahogany with clear glass and brass elements, the piece possesses a rich patina and distinct wood grain. The design incorporates an arched frame housing the adjustable mirror plate, held securely by turned side knobs mounted on prominent scrolled supports. A serpentine plinth base with carved feet grounds the structure, whilst stepped mouldings frame the mirror glass. Practical dimensions measure 25 cm high by 24 cm wide by 15 cm deep. Perfect for display upon a sideboard top or chest of drawers in a bedroom or hallway, this compact antique brings period character to traditional interior schemes.

A toilet mirror, also known as a swing mirror, was designed during the Victorian period to sit on top of a dressing table or chest of drawers to assist with daily grooming and personal dressing.

These mirrors were commonly crafted from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, featuring turned wooden or brass tension knobs and hand-bevelled or silvered glass plates.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-carved scrollwork, original wooden side fixings, hand-cut joinery on the plinth base, and natural age-related oxidisation or foxing on the mirror glass.

A small swing mirror can be styled atop a contemporary sideboard, bedroom chest of drawers, or vanity unit to introduce warmth and rich wood tones to a modern scheme.

The mahogany frame should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned occasionally with beeswax, while the glass should be cleaned gently with a dry or lightly dampened microfibre cloth avoiding harsh chemicals on aged silvering.
