Fine Victorian Walnut and Chestnut Leather Armchair, C.1870

19th century
Description

A particularly handsome and beautifully proportioned Victorian walnut armchair, dating to circa 1870, upholstered in wonderfully rich chestnut leather and combining elegant craftsmanship, exceptional comfort and timeless English country house charm.

The chair features a beautifully buttoned back, with a lovely gentle rake that provides excellent support and creates a wonderfully relaxed and inviting seating position. The richly coloured chestnut leather gives the chair tremendous warmth and character, perfectly complementing the beautifully figured walnut frame.

Raised on elegantly turned walnut legs, the chair retains its original castors, a particularly attractive period detail that adds to its quality and authenticity.

Of particular appeal is the combination of the rich chestnut leather, beautifully turned walnut legs and gracefully raked back, giving the chair a wonderfully balanced appearance, with just the right amount of Victorian elegance and country house character.

The chair is solid and sturdy throughout, with a reassuring quality of construction, while the generously proportioned seat and gently reclining back make it exceptionally comfortable.

A superb example of 19th-century English upholstered seating, equally at home in a country house drawing room, gentleman's library, beside a fireplace or as a statement piece in a contemporary interior.

This Victorian armchair dates to 1870 and belongs to the walnut and chestnut leather seating group. The framework is made of walnut, upholstered in chestnut brown leather, with brass and ceramic castors on the feet. Key visual details include deep buttoning on the backrest, turned front legs, and carved details on the arm supports, alongside metal nailhead studding along the edges. The dimensions measure 97 cm high, 70 cm wide, and 70 cm deep. In a home today, this armchair is suitable for placement in a gentleman's library, a drawing room, next to a fireplace, or as a statement piece in a contemporary interior setting. The deep-buttoned back and gently raked profile create an inviting seating position. The sturdy walnut frame rests on turned legs fitted with original castors, maintaining the traditional aesthetic of 19th-century English upholstered furniture.

Mid-to-late Victorian armchairs typically feature deep button-tufted leather upholstery, hand-carved solid timber frames such as walnut or mahogany, and turned front legs fitted with ceramic or brass castors.

Construction relied on solid hardwood framescommonly walnut, oak, or mahoganypaired with natural leather upholstery, horsehair stuffing, hand-tied steel coil springs, and decorative brass studs.

Genuine period pieces display original joinery such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, natural wear to the solid wood frame, age-appropriate patination on the leather, and period ceramic or brass wheel castors.

Position the armchair alongside a minimalist metal side table or beneath contemporary artwork to create a deliberate contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design elements.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources, clean the leather periodically with a specialised hide food or leather conditioner, and polish the carved walnut frame with natural beeswax.
