19th century
Description

An outstanding and exceptionally comfortable Victorian wingback armchair in the Howard style, beautifully upholstered in rich chestnut leather and possessing all the elegance, character and generous proportions associated with the finest English country house seating.

The chair features a wonderfully deep and generously proportioned seat, complemented by a beautifully buttoned back and traditional winged sides, creating an inviting and exceptionally comfortable place to relax.

The sumptuous feather-filled seat cushion provides wonderful softness and comfort, while the rich chestnut leather gives the chair a particularly handsome appearance, perfectly suited to a traditional library, drawing room or country house interior.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. FAQs

Wingback chairs were first developed in seventeenth-century England to shield occupants from cold draughts and retain heat from open fireplaces. By the late Victorian era, manufacturers refined the design by integrating fully upholstered arms, deep buttoning, and coil-sprung seating for enhanced comfort.

Authentic period examples feature solid hardwood frames, typically oak or mahogany, upholstered in full-grain calfskin or hide. The internal structure generally relies on hand-tied steel coil springs, natural horsehair padding, individually driven brass studs, and hand-carved legs.

Look for signs of traditional craftsmanship such as hand-carved ball-and-claw feet, original ceramic or brass castors, hand-applied brass studs, and hand-tufted buttoning. Natural ageing, gentle craquelure on the leather surface, and solid hardwood frame construction also indicate period authenticity.

A rich leather wingback chair provides visual weight and texture when placed against neutral plaster walls or minimalist backgrounds. Pair it with a contemporary reading light, a simple side table, or layer it alongside modern soft furnishings to balance traditional features with contemporary living.

Maintain natural leather by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a specialist leather conditioner every six to twelve months to prevent drying. Keep the chair away from direct heat sources such as radiators or direct sunlight to avoid premature fading and cracking.
