Antique Edwardian Leather Armchair

19th century
Description

A wonderful antique Edwardian leather armchair, made in England and dating from around 1890-1910.

It is of outstanding quality and is a useful petite size. It is very comfortable and is beautifully designed, with gorgeous deep buttoned leather upholstery. It stands on tapered solid oak legs with brass casters on the front legs.

This had been fully re-upholstered by the previous owner, with the original horse hair stuffing being retained. We have had the leather revived and enhanced by our leather restorer, the legs have also been re-polished. The condition is superb, with a lovely overall patina.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian leather armchairs from the early 1900s prioritize comfort and generous proportions compared to Victorian precursors. Key features include deep button-tufted upholstery, rolled arms, brass studding along the borders, and tapered wooden legs set on brass castors.

Authentic Edwardian armchairs feature solid hardwood frames, typically crafted from oak, mahogany, or beech. The upholstery traditionally utilises top-grain leather dyed in deep natural shades, filled with natural horsehair or coconut fibre and supported by hand-tied coil springs.

Authentic pieces display genuine age-related surface patina and natural wear to the leather, rather than uniform artificial distressing. Additional indicators include hand-tacked brass studs, square or turned timber legs with original brass castors, and period-appropriate internal spring construction.

A traditional leather armchair serves as a strong grounding element in contemporary spaces. Pair it with crisp neutral walls, sleek modern side tables, or place it alongside a contemporary floor lamp to create a balanced mix of historical texture and modern design.

Keep the leather hydrated by applying a high-quality leather conditioner or beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the chair positioned away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the hide from drying out, cracking, or fading.
