This early 19th-century wall mirror exhibits Rococo Revival style with a prominent carved eagle cresting at the top. The frame is constructed from giltwood with a rich gold finish, retaining much of its original gilding alongside an exposed pine groundwork at the rear. The intricately carved rectangular frame incorporates elaborate C-scrolls, floral motifs, shell work, and dense acanthus leaf decoration framing a bevelled replacement mirror plate. Measuring 182 cm in height and 82 cm in width, the piece provides substantial vertical presence. In a contemporary home, this decorative wall mirror hangs effectively above a living room mantelpiece or within a grand hallway. The ornate gilded frame brings traditional French Chateau character to interior spaces while reflecting light across the room. The piece functions well as a focal point on a plain wall or paired with period furniture, adding historical texture and reflective depth to traditional and transitional room schemes alike.

Rococo mirrors from the 19th century are characterised by asymmetric C-scrolls, acanthus leaf carving, rocaille detailing, and elaborate crestings such as carved eagles or floral motifs.

These mirrors were constructed from carved wood or carved wood combined with composition ornament, coated in layers of gesso, and finished with gold leaf applied over a red or yellow clay bole.

Authentic pieces typically display signs of hand carving on the reverse frame, fine age cracking in the gesso, light wear exposing the underlying red bole, and original mirror glass with natural silvering variation.

Positioning the mirror above a contemporary console table or fireplace mantel creates a focal point, contrasting ornate period gilding with clean architectural lines.

Dust the carved frame gently using a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding water, liquid polishes, or cleaning solvents which can dissolve the gilding and damage the underlying gesso.
