Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pair of Italian wall mirrors dating from 1930 in the Italian Classical style. Each piece comprises a reflective glass plate encased in a giltwood frame with a gold leaf finish. The design incorporates an arched top, a pierced frame with openwork trim, and detailed foliate carving along the outer edge. The reflective plates feature bevelled edges, and the wooden elements display visible golden tones across the ornate scrollwork surface. Measuring 86 cm high by 46 cm wide, these items are sized for placement above a sideboard in a dining room or living area. They mount to the wall to introduce light and decorative texture to an interior space.

FAQs

Italian giltwood mirror design historically incorporates elaborate wood carving, classical architectural forms, and gold leaf finishing. Frequently featuring arched tops, scrollwork, and openwork detailing, these pieces were crafted to enhance ambient light in salon settings.

Traditional giltwood frames are constructed from hand-carved wood coated with layers of gesso. Thin sheets of real gold leaf are applied over a clay base (bole) using water gilding or oil gilding techniques, followed by burnishing to achieve a textured lustre.

Authentic pieces generally show subtle wear to the gilding, revealing the reddish or grey clay bole beneath. The backboard construction often displays hand-sawed timber, square nails, or wire fasteners, alongside natural age-related patination on the glass mirror plate.

A pair of giltwood mirrors can be hung symmetrically above a sideboard, flanking a doorway, or positioned side-by-side above bedside tables. The warm metallic tones provide contrasting texture against contemporary matte paint finishes and minimalist furniture.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster without liquid cleaners, which can dissolve the water-soluble gesso ground. Clean the glass carefully by spraying mirror cleaner onto a microfibre cloth rather than directly onto the frame.
