This is an antique wall mirror. An Italian, gilt gesso and glass ornate overmantle mirror, dating to the Regency period, circa 1820.

Gilt gesso should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid chipping fragile plaster details. Liquid cleansers and abrasive solvents must be avoided, as moisture can dissolve gesso and remove delicate leaf gilding.

An ornate gilded mirror acts as a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantel, console table, or sideboard. Positioning it opposite a window maximises light distribution while creating a decorative contrast against plain neutral walls or dark painted backgrounds.

Authentic period pieces often show age-related wear such as fine surface crazing in the gesso, subtle dulling or oxidisation of the gilding, and evidence of hand carving on the reverse wooden support panel. The glass may also exhibit light distress or minor mercury-amalgam foxing.

These frames are constructed from a carved timber base onto which a plaster-like chalk and glue mixture known as gesso is applied. Artisans then mould or recarve fine decorative details into the setting gesso before applying thin sheets of gold leaf to the surface.
