Huge 19th Century Giltwood Mirror C. 1860

19th century
Description

At six feet tall this is a very beautiful and extremely large mid-19th Century mirror with original water gilding to the frame and all in wonderful condition.

The reeded Corinthian columns with expansive acanthus carved capitals and broad swept acanthus leaves at the base. All hand carved with red bole and gesso and gilded in pure gold.

The arched cornice of running acanthus leaves and scrolls crested by a large C scroll and below this a small cartouche of central open flower head.

The plinth with shaped apron with central roundel cartouche flanked by the large acanthus sprays and projected wide shapely feet.

The mirror plate is in excellent condition. Very thick glass and giving a wonderful deep reflection. This may be the original plate or a late 19th century/early 20th century replacement.

Retaining the original and substantial oak panelled back with a later bar added above and brass brackets added to this and to the bottom plinth so that the mirror can be wall hung.

Absolutely stunning and extremely rare in this very large size. With no significant issues or worm or damage.

Strongly recommended

This enormous French Rococo Revival mirror dates from the mid-nineteenth century and follows the nineteenth-century tradition of grand interior furnishings. The object consists of a wooden frame coated in gesso and red bole, finished with original water gilding in a bright gold colour. Hand-carved details include reeded Corinthian columns with acanthus-carved capitals, expansive acanthus leaves at the base, and an arched cornice of running acanthus leaves. A large C-scroll forms the cresting above a central open flower head cartouche, and the base features a shaped apron with a central roundel. The frame encloses a thick glass plate set against a substantial oak panelled back with added brass brackets. Measuring 183 cm high by 145 cm wide by 9 cm deep, the scale makes this piece suited for placement above a drawing room mantelpiece or as an architectural wall hanging in a spacious hallway. The substantial proportions and deep reflection allow it to anchor a room while bouncing natural light across the interior space. The solid construction and gold finish integrate smoothly into period reception rooms, country house interiors, or large sitting areas where a substantial focal point is required.

A 19th-century giltwood mirror is a decorative wall or overmantel glass crafted during the Victorian era, characterised by timber frames sculpted with ornate foliage or scrollwork and finished with gold leaf applied over a gesso ground.

Traditional giltwood mirror frames were constructed using carved softwoods or hardwoods, sealed with layers of gesso and clay bole, and finished with thin sheets of genuine gold leaf applied via water or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display natural surface wear, red or grey clay bole showing through rubbed gold leaf, minor glass desilverisation, and hand-cut timber backing panels held by traditional fixings.

A large gilded mirror functions as a room focal point when hung above a fireplace mantelpiece, positioned over a hallway console table, or leaned against a wall to bounce natural light throughout the room.

Giltwood frames should be cleaned exclusively with a dry, soft camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding water, liquid cleaners, and chemical polishes that dissolve delicate gesso and gold leaf coatings.
