This Charles I oak Yorkshire wainscot armchair dates to approximately 1635 and exemplifies seventeenth-century English vernacular seating. Rendered in dark brown timber with an aged patina, the chair displays a carved foliate design along its shaped cresting rail, a central lozenge motif on the panelled back, sloped arms, and turned front legs connected by flat stretchers. Construction details comprise original timbers, seat boards, and visible pegged joints, alongside a minor addition or re-tipping on the front feet. The piece measures 110 cm high, 59 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. Suitable for daily seating or display, this historic armchair fits naturally into a gentleman's library, study, or hallway as a statement period seat. Its robust frame provides functional seating while anchoring a room with seventeenth-century character. The design accommodates an upright posture with wide armrests and a high panelled back, bringing authentic period craftsmanship into contemporary domestic spaces.

A wainscot armchair is a heavy, panel-backed wooden chair that originated in northern Europe and became prominent in 16th and 17th-century Britain. The term originates from high-grade oak boards traditionally used for panelling walls and constructing joiner-made furniture during this period.

These chairs were constructed primarily from solid quarter-sawn oak, assembled using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. They feature turned front legs, straight back legs, perimeter stretchers, and relief-carved back panels displaying geometric or botanical designs.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces, hand-cut wooden peg ends slightly raised above or recessed into the frame, and natural shrinkage across wood grain patterns. Look for deep, aged oxidisation in crevices and honest wear patterns on stretchers and armrests where feet and hands rested.

Place the chair as an architectural accent piece in a hallway, library, or drawing room, paired with contemporary art or neutral textiles to highlight its carved wooden form. Combining high-contrast dark oak with textured linen upholstery or understated plaster walls adds depth to modern spaces.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a pure beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber. Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent timber movement, warping, or splitting.
