This large Victorian overmantel mirror dates from 1870 and displays an English country house style. The tall frame is constructed from wood and gesso finished in gold leaf with a bright gold colour. An arched top sits above vertical sides and a flat base, complemented by square plinth corner blocks and subtle raised floral or foliate mouldings. The plate glass mirror is a later replacement and remains in very good condition. Measuring 139.5 cm high by 137 cm wide with a 9 cm depth, the piece makes a substantial statement. Placed traditionally above a living room or bedroom fireplace mantel, it brings brightness and a sense of space to an interior wall.

Victorian overmantel mirrors typically feature architectural profiles such as arched tops, designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. They frequently incorporate decorative gesso moulding and gold leaf gilding applied over timber frames.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or lime wood bases coated in gesso plaster, which was carved or moulded into intricate relief patterns and finished with gold leaf application over clay bole.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display signs of age such as fine craquelure across the gesso surface, red or grey bole showing through worn gilding, and original silvered glass with minor oxidisation spots.

Positioning a large gilt mirror above a fireplace or console table adds vertical proportions and reflects ambient light across the space. The contrast between warm gilding and neutral wall tones provides a balanced focal point.

Dust gilt frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical sprays that can dissolve gesso or water gilding. The glass mirror pane should be cleaned with a lightly damp microfibre cloth while preventing moisture from contacting the frame.
