This large antique French mirror from the nineteenth century in the French Chateau style is formed from carved wood, glass and paint. The wooden frame carries a distressed whitewash finish with visible grey timber tones beneath, an architectural pediment at the top, fluted pilasters down the sides, a carved medallion crest, and linear mouldings. It incorporates an original bevelled mirror plate showing darker foxing marks and surface wear along the left border. The piece measures 158 cm high, 106 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this large wall-mounted mirror suits placement above a living room mantelpiece, in a hallway, or over a bedroom console table to reflect natural light and create a sense of scale. The aged surface texture and muted neutral palette integrate easily into period and rustic interior schemes without dominating the surrounding decor.

19th-century French painted mirrors typically incorporate Neoclassical elements such as carved crestings, architectural pediments, fluted pilasters, and central medallions. They frequently draw influence from Louis XVI design traditions, presenting balanced proportions and muted colour palettes.

These frames were commonly crafted from native hardwoods or softwoods, which were hand-carved, prepared with a layer of gesso, and painted. The mirror glass itself was historically back-silvered, producing gentle foxing and aging over time.

Authentic 19th-century examples display characteristic construction signs, such as hand-cut wooden backboards, natural distress to the paint layer revealing bare timber or gesso beneath, and original glass with authentic oxidisation spots.

Position the mirror above a fireplace mantel piece, console table, or sideboard to create a focal point. The distressed grey paint and architectural frame provide textured contrast against contemporary neutral walls and streamlined furniture.

Dust the carved wooden frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush to clean deep crevices without disturbing flaking paint. Clean the mirror glass with a damp microfibre cloth, taking care not to let liquid seep behind the frame into the backing.
