This large late 19th-century French trumeau mirror dates from the period around 1890 in a French Provincial style. The tall wooden frame has an aged cream painted finish combined with parcel-gilt mouldings and an upper oil-on-canvas panel. The pastoral artwork shows a courting couple and a child by the water in a wooded landscape with buildings, while the lower section holds an original glass mirror plate. The surface displays minor cracking and wear to the paint, rubbing to the gilding, and light foxing on the glass, alongside evidence of old treated woodworm on the panelled back. The frame measures 195 cm in height and 100 cm in width. Placement in a home typically involves hanging this large decorative piece above a mantelpiece in a living room, dining room, or hallway to create an impressive focal point. The vertical orientation and combined artwork and mirror format suit formal interior spaces designed in a French chateau aesthetic.

A trumeau mirror originated in eighteenth-century France, characterised by a tall rectangular frame housing a mirror glass plate at the bottom and an oil painting or carved relief panel directly above it.

These pieces are constructed using a carved timber structure with applied gesso moulding, finished with oil paint and gold leaf gilding, incorporating a reflective glass plate and oil paint on canvas or wood.

Authentic period examples exhibit signs of age such as natural craquelure on the paintwork, soft wear to the gilding revealing underlying gesso, hand-assembled backboards, and authentic age wear on the glass plate.

Place the mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece or a dining room console table to draw the eye upwards, combining reflective surface light with classical framed visual art.

Dust the gilded moulding and painted wooden panel softly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, keeping moisture away from gilded gesso, and clean the mirror glass using a separate lightly dampened cloth.
