This large nineteenth-century French chateau style leaner mirror stands tall with a simple wooden frame painted in a soft cream finish, complemented by a distinctive arched top and a flat base. The timber framework incorporates a classical moulded border surrounding the original heavy glass mirror plate, which retains its original backboard. Signs of authentic age appear in the gentle weathering across the painted wooden surface and the subtle softening of the cream paint along the upper arch. Measuring 211 cm high and 123 cm wide, the piece provides substantial scale for interiors. Placed above a sideboard in a dining room, mounted over a mantelpiece in a sitting room, or positioned freestanding against a principal wall, the mirror brings traditional French chateau character and light reflection into contemporary living spaces.

French arched mirrors are characterised by a gentle curved upper arch resting on a rectangular base, often featuring simple rounded mouldings or subtle carving influenced by French architectural silhouettes from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

These mirrors typically feature hand-carved pine, oak, or softwood frames finished with layered gesso and painted finishes, housing blown plate glass or early silvered glass panes.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural wear, layer flaking, or oxidisation to the paint, alongside hand-hewn wooden backing boards, original square or cut nails, and age-appropriate distressing or foxing on the reflective glass.

Positioning an arched mirror above a sideboard, fireplace mantelpiece, or console table introduces vertical architectural height while drawing natural light through contemporary rooms.

Clean the painted frame using a soft, dry microfibre cloth without liquid polish or detergents. Apply glass cleaner directly to a cloth rather than the glass to prevent moisture from seeping into the surrounding wooden frame.
