This nineteenth-century gilt pier mirror exhibits a Regency style, constructed from giltwood and gesso with a clear glass plate and a gilded gold finish throughout the frame. The design includes a cavetto cornice decorated with ball mounts, a latticework frieze across the upper section, and fluted pilasters framing the sides, complemented by Corinthian capitals at the top and simple block bases. The physical dimensions measure 99 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, presenting a vertical format suitable for hanging on a narrow wall space in a hallway, bedroom, or living area. The construction displays traditional joinery and carved architectural ornaments characteristic of nineteenth-century decorative mirrors, designed to hang securely on an interior wall to reflect light and space within a room.

A pier mirror was originally designed during the 18th and 19th centuries to fit onto the wall section, or pier, located between two windows. These mirrors were placed specifically to reflect exterior light back into the room, maximizing illumination before electricity.

19th-century pier mirrors were typically built with a wooden core coated in gesso moulding and finished with hand-applied gold leaf. The mirror pane itself was crafted using silvered or mercury-backed sheet glass.

Authentic period gilding shows natural surface patination, subtle wear on raised edges, and faint join lines between individual square sheets of gold leaf. Period glass often displays minor distortions, atmospheric foxing, or light desilvering.

A gilt pier mirror can be placed above a sideboard, placed at the end of a hallway, or hung in a narrow alcove to create visual depth. Positioning classical gilded detail against contemporary paint finishes provides architectural contrast.

Dust gilded frames using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent disturbing delicate gold leaf or gesso detailing. Clean the glass pane using a damp microfibre cloth, keeping liquids completely away from the frame edge.
