This large Victorian Gothic armchair originates from 1860 and is constructed from dark brown oak, burgundy leather, and brass. The imposing structure stands 125 cm high, 65 cm wide, and 54 cm deep, with a seat height of 45.5 cm. The tall back features a carved cresting rail depicting oak leaves, a central splat decorated with carved foliage, and reeded vertical supports flanked by barley twist uprights with small turned finials at the top. The open arms include padded burgundy leather rests secured with brass studs and terminate in carved lion heads. The wide seat is upholstered in smooth burgundy leather edged with brass upholstery tacks. Beneath the seat sits an intricate carved frieze, while the base comprises barley twist legs with turned feet joined by matching barley twist stretchers for stability. This substantial armchair suits placement in a study, library, or drawing room as a functional and decorative seating option.

During the Victorian period, cabinetmakers drew heavy inspiration from 17th-century Jacobean and Carolean furniture styles. These revival pieces featured elaborate hand-carvings, high backrests, and barley twist turnings to evoke a sense of historic English heritage in 19th-century interiors.

These armchairs are typically constructed from solid English oak, valued for its density and pronounced grain. Upholstery frequently comprised genuine leather or heavy woven textiles, secured to the timber frame using brass studding.

Authentic pieces display signs of natural timber shrinkage, deep patina in unexposed crevices, and traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints. Look for crisp hand-carved detailing and period-appropriate wear along the armrests and stretchers.

A carved oak armchair works effectively as a statement accent piece in a hallway, library, or study. Pairing dark carved timber with neutral walls, modern art, or contemporary textiles creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern interior design.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood finish. Leather seats should be treated with a specialist leather conditioner to prevent drying or cracking, and the chair should be kept away from direct heat sources.
