19th Century Victorian Oak Bobbin Armchair

19th century
Description

A striking and authentic 19th-century Victorian English country open armchair, beautifully crafted from solid oak with a rich, dark aged patina. This classic statement piece features extensive, high-quality bobbin turning (or spool turning) across the legs, arms, and backrest uprights, accented by distinctive incised concentric roundels on the leg blocks.

The handwoven cane seat is in taut, immaculate condition. For an immediate blend of period character and contemporary luxury, the arm pads and loose seat cushion have been newly upholstered in premium Wemyss Luxor Velvet (Silver Ash).

The chair retains its excellent structural integrity, stable stance, and smooth-rolling original brass castors, making it as practical as it is decorative. An ideal accent chair for a bedroom, reading nook, or traditional living space.

Condition: Excellent antique condition. Hardwood frame is solid with rich patinated polish. Woven cane is perfect and taut. Fabric is brand new.

Dimensions: H 91cm x W 60cm x D 67cm (Seat height X cm inclusive of cushion).

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Deep bobbin turnings throughout the frame: popular late Victorian seating design.
Brass wheel castors on front feet: standard late nineteenth-century cabinet brassware.
Incised roundels on the front leg blocks: decorative detail typical of the 1880s.
Darkening and surface marks to the oak: natural ageing from prolonged domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Bobbin-turned furniture, also known as spool furniture, originated in the 17th century and experienced a resurgence during the Victorian era. The style features timber turned on a lathe to form repeating series of spherical or spool-like shapes along the legs, stretchers, and backrests.

Victorian bobbin chairs were primarily constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or beech. Seats frequently featured woven cane or upholstered cushions, while the front legs often incorporated brass castors.

Authentic 19th-century examples show slight hand-turned variations across the bobbins rather than modern machine uniformity. They also feature traditional mortise and tenon joinery, historical surface patination, and original brass castors.

A bobbin armchair provides structural detail when placed alongside contemporary furniture. Position it in a hallway or reading nook paired with a neutral wool throw or textured cushion to contrast the dark woodwork.

Dust the timber framework regularly with a dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to maintain the dark finish. Ensure the woven cane seat is kept away from direct heat sources to prevent the organic fibres from becoming brittle.
