This nineteenth century French Louis XVI style armchair stands on fluted tapering legs with channel moulding and features a square high-backed frame decorated with a carved ribbon bow cresting and husk details at the top. The down-swept arms are supported by channel moulded pilasters at the front, complemented by padded wings flanking the seat. The wooden frame retains an original worn cream and grey paint finish, while the upholstery consists of dusty pink velvet with brass nailhead trim surrounding the edges and a feather-filled loose seat cushion. Measuring 100 cm high, 71 cm wide, with a seat depth of 48 cm and a seat height of 46 cm including the cushion, this generous piece provides comfortable seating. In a contemporary home, this armchair suits placement in a living room, study, or bedroom as a reading chair or an accent seat, adding a traditional French chateau aesthetic to the interior. The combination of the painted wooden frame and the soft pink fabric introduces texture and classic elegance to domestic spaces.

Originating in 18th-century France, Louis XVI furniture marked a return to Neoclassical principles, characterised by straight geometric lines, fluted tapered legs, and classical motifs such as ribbon ties and guilloche carving.

Traditional French bergeres were constructed from solid hardwood frames, often beech or walnut, featuring joinery secured with mortise and tenon joints, hand-carved ornamentation, and painted or gilded finishes complemented by velvet or damask upholstery.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit natural wear patterns to original painted finishes, hand-carved frame joinery with peg construction, oxidised brass upholstery tacks, and subtle structural irregularities inherent to hand craftsmanship.

Position the armchair as a focal accent piece alongside a minimalist side table, pairing its muted paint patina and textured velvet upholstery with neutral linen drapery and modern lighting to create a refined contrast.

Dust the carved wooden frame using a dry soft-bristled brush to avoid stripping original distemper paint, while gently vacuuming velvet upholstery using a low-suction fabric attachment.
